Moir Hut

Elevation: 3,050 meters above sea level

Moir Hut on the Lemosho Route trek is not a campsite for sleeping, it is merely used as an acclimatization point on day 4 of both the 7-day and 8-day Lmeosho treking itineraries. Since Moir Hut is located high above the Shira 1 and Shira 2 Camps, we will climb to Moir Hut and then descend to Shira Camp 2 to sleep. This hike used the “climb high, sleep low” rule of acclimatising on Mount Kilimanajro. Moir Hut is an old, worn-out wooden shelter shaped like a pyramid, sitting on the wide Shira Plateau of Mount Kilimanjaro. It was one of the first camps built to give climbers a place to stay, but it’s not used anymore and has fallen into ruin.

Location

Moir Hut is about 100 meters north of the Moir Hut campsite, near a rocky volcanic ridge on the northeastern side of Kilimanjaro. You can come across it if you’re climbing via the Shira, Lemosho, or Machame routes and take a slight detour. The Northern Circuit route is the only one that goes right through it without changing your path. The area around Moir Hut is part of the alpine desert, so there aren’t many plants or animals. It gets very little rain, and the ground is mostly rocky with volcanic ash soil.

What It’s Like on the Lemosho Route

On an 8-day Lemosho trek, you reach Moir Hut after starting at Shira Camp 1 and moving through Shira 2. The journey takes you across the Shira Plateau, a high, flat area with moorland meadows and a stream. You walk east toward Kibo’s icy peak, covering 14 kilometers in about 5 to 7 hours. The height climbs from 11,500 feet to 13,800 feet. Moir Hut sits at the base of Lent Hills, a quiet spot not many climbers use. The hills offer different paths to explore, making it a great chance to get used to the altitude. The Shira Plateau is one of the highest flat areas in the world.

From Moir Hut, the next stretch heads to Lava Tower and then Barranco Camp.

You proceed east up a ridge, passing a turn-off to Kibo, then swing southeast toward Lava Tower, known as “Shark’s Tooth.” After that, you hit another junction that takes you up to Arrow Glacier before dropping down to Barranco Camp at 13,000 feet. This part is 7 kilometers and takes 4 to 6 hours through a semi-desert landscape. You end at the same height you started, but the ups and downs help your body adjust for the summit climb later. At Barranco, you rest, eat dinner, and sleep.

On a 7-day Lemosho trek, Moir Hut comes later, and the trip to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp happens in one go. Starting from the Shira Plateau, you follow the same path—east up a ridge, past the Kibo junction, then southeast to Lava Tower. You climb to Arrow Glacier and descend to Barranco Camp at 13,000 feet. It’s also 7 kilometers and 4 to 6 hours in the semi-desert. Like the longer trek, this day helps you get ready for the summit, even though the elevation doesn’t change much by the end.
Moir Hut is a rugged, lonely spot with a faded past, surrounded by rocky emptiness—a quiet stop before the tougher climbs ahead.
