Mti Mkubwa Camp

Elevation: 2,780 meters above sea level

Mti Mkubwa Camp is special because it’s the first stop on the Lemosho Route for bot the 7 days and 8 days treks, a trail loved for its beauty and fewer crowds. Unlike some other routes up Kilimanjaro, this path doesn’t see as many hikers, which makes the experience feel more personal. The camp itself is simple—there are no buildings or fancy shelters here, just a cleared space for tents. Climbers need to bring their own camping gear because the only things you’ll find are a ranger’s hut and basic pit toilets. The ground was made flat by cutting down some trees long ago, but the forest still wraps around it tightly, with tall trees acting like a natural wall against the wind.

Location

Located on the northwestern side of Kilimanjaro, Mti Mkubwa sits near a valley in the heart of the rainforest zone. It’s a damp place, with lots of rain and moisture in the air, which keeps the plants growing thick and green. The big trees block out strong breezes, so it stays calm and quiet—perfect for resting after your first hike. Because it’s smaller than other campsites on the mountain, it doesn’t get crowded. This fits well with the Lemosho Route’s reputation as a less-traveled option, giving you a chance to enjoy the wild beauty without lots of people around.
The trek to Mti Mkubwa starts at Londorossi Gate, where you enter Kilimanjaro National Park. From there, it’s a steady walk through the forest until you reach this cozy camp. It’s a great introduction to the mountain, letting you settle in and get ready for the bigger challenges ahead. After spending the night here, you’ll move on to the next stop, Shira Camp 1, crossing into a different kind of landscape. The journey from Mti Mkubwa is just the start of an amazing climb that changes as you go higher, from thick trees to open, rugged land. Here’s what you can expect as you begin your trek from Londorossi Gate and continue past Mti Mkubwa.

Vegetation & Weather

When you start your adventure up Mount Kilimanjaro within the rainforest zone using the Lemosho Route, one of the first places you’ll get to know is Mti Mkubwa Camp, also called Forest Camp. This spot marks the beginning of an incredible journey through one of the quieter and more scenic paths to the mountain’s summit. In Swahili, “Mti Mkubwa” means “big tree,” and it’s a perfect name—huge trees tower over this campsite, creating a shady, peaceful spot deep in the rainforest. It’s where climbers spend their first night after leaving the Londorossi Gate, the starting point of the trek. The camp sits in a lush, green area that feels far away from the busy world, surrounded by nature’s sounds and sights.
